To make great hiring decisions, you need as much relevant applicant information as you can get. You, as the interviewer, must plan your strategy ahead of time. Composing questions during the interview puts your focus on the questions, rather than on listening. Listening carefully to what the applicant is saying is essential . You cannot effectively focus on composing your next question while listening to an applicant's response. One will lose out. You're bound to miss hearing some applicant information, miss some questions to ask, or perhaps both. You should know what you want to ask before you go into the interview so that you can focus exclusively on listening. This is a critical part of information gathering. It's best if you write out your questions ahead of time. This allows you to choose the best phrasing, which often results in questions that yield better information. Most importantly, not just any question will do. If you want top-notch results, you need to ask top-notch questions.
